MEDIA RELEASE

SUBJECT : GOVERNMENT’S PROPOSED LAND TENURE AMENDMENT BILL

ISSUED BY : Mr. Werner Weber

CAPACITY : FF Plus Spokesperson: Land Affairs

DATE : 10 January 2011

“The government’s intention to obtain land on behalf of farm workers by using far-reaching expropriation powers is a dangerous and irresponsible intention,” was the reaction of Mr. Werner Weber, spokesperson on Land Affairs for the Freedom Front Plus, to the proposed land tenure amendment bill, which was published in the government gazette on 24 December 2010.

This proposed amendment bill holds considerable and far-reaching consequences for traditional property right principles. It removes the cornerstone of economic stability in South Africa and its use will not be restricted to farm dwellers and agricultural land.

The ANC government appears to be committed to changing property rights in SA due to political considerations but do not realize what the consequences of this tendency could be.

Mr. Weber cautioned the ANC government to reconsider its approach to property rights in South Africa and rather adopt a sensible long term approach to its policy on property rights in the interest of economic stability in the country.
