Anglo AmericanAnglo American must appoint a black South African as chairman, Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu said on Thursday.

"It should come as no surprise that we feel strongly about this issue," she told Sapa via email.

"Anglo American has its roots in South Africa and its role in the South African economy is very significant."

She said the government had been actively pursuing the transformation of the country in every aspect "and therefore we would prefer to have a black South African as the Chairperson of Anglo".

The minister said this would be "a positive signal going forward" that Anglo was committed to South Africa, to the transformation of its economy and the development of the country.

A government official, who asked not to be named, said a list had been compiled of candidates for the post of Anglo American chairman.

It included Cyril Ramaphosa, Popo Molefe, Valli Moosa, Sivi Gounden and Jabu Moleketi.

Anglo American will appoint a new chairman when present chairman Sir Mark Moody-Stuart retires.

In April, Moody-Stuart said his successor would be named within a year.

Anglo American spokesman Pranill Ramchander told Sapa he could not comment on the list.

"We'll make an announcement when we're ready," he said.
