Nelson MandelaPolice arrested 67 people in the Jabulani in Soweto on Saturday, Nelson Mandela's birthday, Gauteng police said.

"On the birthday of former president Nelson Mandela, to do something useful we have arrested 67 suspects," said Inspector Kay Makhubele.

Saturday was the first "Mandela Day", which is meant to be celebrated by people by donating their time and contributing to their communities for 67 minutes.

Makhubele, however, said police did not arrest 67 people to intentionally reach the auspicious number.

"It's a coincidence," he said.

The 67 were arrested for malicious damage to property, rape, armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm.  Thirty-one were arrested for public drunkenness.

All of those arrested will appear in Proteas Magistrate's court on Monday.
