Pretoria - A police constable was shot and wounded by a gang of about 20 men who bombed two ATMs in Mamelodi, Pretoria police said on Tuesday.

The robbers blew up two ATMs at Max City Shopping Centre around 22:00 on Monday, taking an undisclosed amount of cash, spokesperson Ben Strydom said.

"Police arrived at the shopping centre after receiving information, but then the group started firing shots at them with an R-5 rifle. One of the shots went through the back seat of the police's unmarked vehicle, hitting a police constable."

The officer was taken to Wilgers Hospital in a stable condition.

The robbers fled in two black BMWs, one with sirens and blue lights, an Audi and a Corsa.

Another police vehicle which pursued the robbers was involved in a crash during the high-speed car chase, allowing the robbers to flee with the money.

"No arrests have been made, but information is being followed up," said Strydom.
