RapistA Pietermaritzburg man serving two life sentences admitted on Tuesday to raping a schoolgirl who was driven over several times by a fellow-rapist.

The two then drove off, leaving their victim for dead, the Pietermaritzburg High Court heard.

However the girl, who was severely injured, recovered after prolonged treatment.

Sabelo Gumbi, 35, was previously jailed for life for the murder of Pietermaritzburg journalist Elaine Anderson, shot dead in the city in 2006.

Testifying about the latest crime, Gumbi said he and a man named Duma held up two men and the girl.

They robbed the men and chased them off before taking the girl to a cemetery, where Duma raped her first. Gumbi said he was sitting in Duma's car.

"Duma (then) came to the car and told me he was finished raping her and that it was my turn," Gumbi testified.

"I got out of the car and went to her. She was lying facing up and I raped her. Then I dressed and went back to the car leaving her lying just behind the car... Duma drove the car back and forward over her body and we left her there, thinking that she was dead."

Judge Fikile Mokgohla convicted Gumbi of two attempted murders, an aggravated robbery and the rape after he admitted the offences.

He is to be sentenced on August 28.
