An off duty police officer was wounded after he tried to intervene in an attempted robbery at a popular international hamburger outlet in Mondeor, south of Johannesburg, police said on Saturday.Spokesman Julia Claassen said four armed men entered the food outlet at the Southgate Value Mart complex at 8.44pm on Friday.
The off duty officer, who was having a meal with his family at the outlet, tried to intervene, but he had his service pistol taken from him and he was shot.
The 44-year-old policeman was shot in the middle of his back and had sustained severe injuries.
He was attended to by Netcare 911. Spokesman Nick Dollman said the officer was airlifted to the Trauma Unit at the Netcare Milpark Hospital for treatment.
A case of attempted murder and attempted robbery was opened and anyone with information about the incident can contact 10111.
