Cope Warns SA Could Face Same Fate As Zim

E-mail Print PDF
Africa HopelessSouth Africans should not kid themselves that they were immune from the same fate as their neighbours in Zimbabwe, Cope presidential candidate Mvume Dandala said on Wednesday.

Addressing a packed auditorium of students and staff at the University of Pretoria, Dandala warned that "the wheels could fall off" in South Africa just as they had in Zimbabwe.

This, he said, was the result of politicians and government "fooling around".

"The degeneration of many countries... has always started with politicians and government leaders fooling around with the rule of law," he said.

Just 20 years since Zimbabwe's liberation, that country was already facing a crisis of tragic proportions.

"We're 15 years [into our democracy] -- only five years [to go]," he said. "It can happen to South Africa. Let us not kid ourselves."

However he told the students that his party would save the country.

"We will not allow South Africa to fall apart. The Congress of the People will seek to hold our people together."
