WP rugby too white

E-mail Print PDF

If you have spent some time working or socializing with Cape Coloureds then you will probably agree that there is probably not a single group in South Africa more openly racist than this lot. They do not take to blacks at all, whom they refer to as “Darkies” or the “K-word”. The Cape Coloured comedian Mark Lottering once explained it. He said that Cape Coloureds do not have a problem with the white or brown side of their family. They will often brag about a grandfather that was German or a grandmother that was Scottish, but they will NEVER refer to or admit to any black person in their family.

Apart from that they are hair fanatics. The women will blow-dry their hair for hours to get it straight and freak out when the slightest bit of moisture is in the air. Children when born are immediately checked out “of die kind hare het”…meaning, does the child have straight hair. Straight hair, light skin and blue eyes allows one a higher social status amongst the coloureds.

Ironically they also like to play the race card both ways. Sometimes they say that we are all Coloureds, only various shades thereof, because Prof. H.F. Heese in 1984 wrote a book called “Groep sonder Grense” (Group without borders) in which he tried to prove that 17th century whites intermarried with Coloureds and Malaysians and therefore have 6% coloured genes.

I do not have a problem being classed as Coloured, they should just tell me where I can fall in line for my BEE and Affirmative Action benefits, because whites are being discriminated against in sport quotas, university entrances, the job market, tendering and shares in parastatals such as Sasol, Telkom, Eskom, etc.

It is exactly at this point where the card is played the other way and we are told we are whites and that there are too many of us in the national and provincial rugby teams. All of a sudden we are not “all Coloureds” anymore.

A case in point was this past weekend when the Cape Coloured vice president of Western Province Rugby, Thelo Wakefield said that there were too many whites (the not-so-coloured Coloureds) in the Western Province team. He also said that “The clubs decided that enough is enough and the current state of affairs cannot be tolerated. I have an appointment with WP coach Allister Coetzee [also a Coloured] on Monday where he will have to explain the current state of affairs.”

Funnily enough, during the 2010 Football World Cup, nobody batted an eyelid when the pathetic South African team was all black.

Incidentally, WP did quite well on the weekend, routing their arch-enemies, the Blue Bulls (Northern Transvaal) by 35-7.

Maybe Wakefield is a secret Blue Bulls spy sent to weaken the Western Province team, because the solution is quite simple. Take the best white (not so coloured Coloureds) players from the Western Cape and let them play against the best Coloured players and the best team gets to stay. Same goes for the Springbok team.

During Apartheid they complained about politics in sport and today they practice it ten times worse. Maybe one day SA Rugby will start picking players on merit instead of on race criteria and then I will start supporting them again… until then, you will find me at the female beach volleyball competitions.
